In the morning we had a much better impression of the hotel, Humphrey's Half Moon Inn and Suites. The room was curious but the grounds were lovely and there was a very impressive open air theatre. We later found out that this is a venue with some really great acts booked this year - Crosby Stills and Nash, for example and amazingly Aussie Pink Floyd which we missed out on this very weekend in Aberdeen. We had a wee game of table tennis beside the very lovely and completely deserted pool. We ventured out of the hotel which was completely surrounded by a marina and all the attendant sailing paraphenalia.
Brunch was partaken at a place called Point Break and then we got on the bus to Old Town. This was a major travel hub for San Diego and there were also trolley tours from here. So we got on the trolley and got our bearings in San Diego. We hopped off at Coronado where there was a traditional rock and roll band playing near the beach and some enthusiasts were jiving. There was a fantastic buzz about the place and it was obviously a popular place to go on a beautiful Sunday. We got off again at Balboa Park where we saw a 'robotic band' among the fantastic architecture of the museums and then caught the last trolley back to Old Town. We decided to have a wee peek at Old Town and walked smack bang into the middle of a fiesta. It was like little Mexico in the heart of the city. The trains from Old Town go to the Mexican border where it is just a short walk to Tiujana.
San Diego is a beautiful city and there is loads to do and see. We went back to the hotel which was, as we now realised, a bit off the beaten track for the night life. The bar there required a cover payment that night as a special singer was playing. Not impressed with that we went to the hotel next door which was dead, Desperate Housewives was on and we had something to eat along with a few beers.
Day 18 - Monday 4th May
On Monday we decided to visit San Diego Zoo as it is one of the best in the world reputedly. This was a great day out - with plenty of pics to show for it! We managed to get some gifts for the relatives back home and then went back with sore feet to the hotel!
We ventured into the bar that evening as it was free admission! There was a jam session in progress and it was excellent - just what we needed. The bar itself was in a great location with lovely views of the Marina. We repeated the previous night's food at the hotel next door - which was even quieter than before!
Day 19 - Tuesday 5th May
Our last full day! We took the bus then the train to Embacadero and wandered along the seafront to Seaport Village. We found the Mall in town to buy gifts for the girls then took the ferry at 3 to Coronado for a last look, returning on the 4.30 back. We had to buy an extra bag to take all our overspill luggage. The Delicatessen at the end of the road provided us with some munchies for the early evening. Our last night was a bit fraught - the end of a lovely holiday. We had a few beers in the Red Sails down the road but didn't have a meal.
Day 20 - Wednesday 6th May and Day 21 Thursday 7th May.
Our return leg was marred by a delay in San Diego which meant our plane sat, with us in it, on the tarmac for nearly 2 hours. Another half hour and we might have missed our connection in San Francisco - but in actual fact that was delayed too. All because of fog in SF.
The trip back to the UK was uneventful - more movies watched, lovely service in Business Class, upstairs in the Jumbo this time - and plenty snoozing too. Our luggage did not come home with us - but returned around tea time the next day.
What a wonderful, wonderful holiday!
